Library Portland Library offers wireless access to the Library’s Internet Service for properly equipped laptops and hand held computers. Patrons using the wireless network agree to adhere to the Library’s Internet Use Policy. The Library will not be responsible for any personal information that is compromised or for any damage caused to a user’s hardware or software due to security issues or consequences caused by viruses or hacking. Wireless users are responsible for setting up their own equipment. Library staff has prepared basic instructions for accessing the Internet via our wireless connection. Library staff cannot assist patrons with their laptops’ network cards nor with their equipments’ configurations. The library cannot accept the liability of handling its patrons’ equipment. Printers are not available through our wireless connection. Printing will remain available using the public computers and printers. The Town of Portland and its network provider maintain the right to inspect all Internet traffic for improper use of computer or network resources. Any use of the network that impedes the library’s computer operations or services will not be allowed. Illegal or inappropriate use of the Internet in the Library is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to the following: 1. Disguising or falsifying sources of electronic mail and other electronic communications with the intent of misleading, defrauding, or harassing others is prohibited. 2. Users must not intentionally develop or use programs that disrupt others’ use of computers and networks, provide unauthorized access to private or restricted information, or damage software or hardware belonging to others. 3. Use of electronic communication facilities to send fraudulent, harassing, obscene, threatening, or other messages that are a violation of applicable federal or state laws is prohibited. Use of the Portland Library wireless network to send “spam” email is prohibited. To ensure the safety of users of the Library, computer users may only plug in their hardware in electrical sockets within designated areas.
