The 1st Annual Take Your Child
to the Library Day!

Saturday, February 4th from 11:30am-12:30 pm
Connecticut Children’s Librarians have gotten together to create this first annual event to share the wonders of our public libraries with children across the state.
 

The Portland Library will be celebrating with a Special Story TimeConnecticut Representative Christie Carpino and Portland First Selectwoman Susan Bransfield, will read their favorite stories.  Miss Judie will do a craft time.  Children who live in Portland will have an opportunity to get their own Library Cards!  Cookies and juice will be served.   Registration is Required!

Ready to Read
Thursdays, January 12th, February 9th, March 8th and April 12th from 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Ready to Read
is a program series for
children in
kindergarten through 2nd grade who have made the  transition into reading. This fun and lively monthly program is designed to enhance the core components a child needs to learn to read. We will be reading more advanced picture books, playing literacy-oriented games, and creating a craft.
Registration is required for this 4 week series.

Reader’s Theatre
Mondays, January 23rd, 30th, and February 6th from 3:30p.m.-5:00p.m.
Back by popular demand!

Children in grades 2-4 are invited to join in a fun new program at the Portland Library.  Reader’s Theatre is an exciting way for children to enjoy literature. We will read a different story together each week, discuss it, read through the script of the story, make props, and in the final 15 minutes of the session, the children will perform the story for their parents, caregivers and friends. 
Registration is required for this 3 week series. 

Nutmeg Book Discussion
Tuesday, January 17th at 4:00 p.m.
It’s January which means that it is
VOTING TIME for Connecticut’s own, Nutmeg Award.
If you are as excited about 2012 titles as we are, you will want to be here this afternoon as we discuss our favorites and make predictions for the winners! Both the Intermediate and the Teen Lists will be discussed. Registration is not required for this event, just drop in! Children in grades 4 and up are welcome to attend.

Weeknight Family Night Series
Tuesday, February 21st, at 6:30 p.m.
Debby Szajnberg
will visit the Portland Library to present a Family Folk Dance program filled with traditional singing games and dances from a variety of cultures for families with children of all ages.  A unique opportunity for inter-generational fun!  So bring the children and the grandparents.

Debby Szajnberg has taught movement for regional and national workshops. She has extensive training in world dance and music with particular expertise in Balkan and Eastern European folk traditions. She is a member of Hijaz, a band without borders, which plays folk dance music from a variety of cultures with an emphasis on Balkan traditions.   Registration is Required. 

This special Family Night Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Portland Library.  Mark you calendar for upcoming Family Nights on Tuesdays, March 13th and April 10th.
