How to Reserve An Item

If the item you wish to borrow an item, you can reserve it and we will notify you when it is ready for you.

To reserve an item by phone:
Call the library at 342-6770 during library hours.
Ask for the Information Desk.
Tell the librarian which item you wish to reserve.

To reserve an item in person at the library:
Go to the Information Desk.
Tell the librarian which item you wish to reserve.

To reserve an item electronically:
Search for the item in the Portland Library's online catalog.
Select Full Details of the item from the search result list.
Select the Hold button (hand) in the right hand box.
Type User ID (patron barcode) and PIN (It’s CHANGEME unless you have altered it).
Select Place Hold.
Respond by clicking on OK.

You may now discover whether a new item has been purchased by the library before it is received.

When you look up a title in the library’s catalog,  an ON ORDER item has a call number beginning with XX. When you click on "Details", or otherwise view the item's information, you will see under LOCATION: "Being acquired by the library" . The item is not yet available. You may place a hold on the item.  The computer system will tell the staff the item is on hold, and it will be processed quickly and held for the first person who placed a hold.

Online catalog

When the item is ready for you, we will telephone you to let you know the item is available.  If we can not reach you by telephone, you will receive a "hold notice" in the mail. The item will be held for you for 7 days. If you don’t pick it up after that time, it will go to the next borrower that wants it.
